South Williamsburg renter guide

Loft living at 315 Berry St.

A converted 1929 factory with 49 apartments, oversized windows and real loft proportions. You are choosing character and space over the everything-is-new polish of a recent high-rise.

What it is actually like

High ceilings, big windows and generous rooms are the reason to look here. Public building records and listings also show elevators, central laundry, a common garden and roof access. Finishes vary by apartment, so photos from another unit are not a substitute for seeing yours.

The neighborhood

Berry Street puts you between the Williamsburg waterfront, Broadway and the busier Bedford Avenue core. Restaurants and nightlife are close, but the immediate blocks feel more residential than Bedford. Noise can still travel in old loft buildings, especially through large open rooms.

Getting around

Marcy Avenue J/M/Z and Bedford Avenue L are both roughly a ten-minute walk in public listings. The NYC Ferry is another useful option from the waterfront. Which one works best depends on whether you are headed downtown, across 14th Street or elsewhere in Brooklyn.

Our take

Best for renters who want a real loft, not a new building made to look like one. The important inspection points are noise, heat, window condition and the exact apartment’s renovation.
